The show is a sequel to the first Chinese Young Contemporary Artists Series in 2008 and continues to promote the art and talent of the above Generation Y artists from Southern China. Chinas Gen Y is a generation of approximately 240 million people born between 1980 and 1990. Growing up in modern China, these young people have been characterized by its optimism for the future and newfound excitement for consumerism, modernization, technology and individualism. Due to the absence of siblings and endearment by their parents and relatives, the 80s born are often labeled as self-centered, artists describe is as self-confidence. In order to differentiate themselves from established Chinese artists known internationally to reflect on the Cultural Revolution (1966-76) or the irony of Chinas fast-developing economy, Generation Y artists pay limited attention to politics and socio-economics. Instead, the 80s born Chinese artists are more sensitive to the change around them, and mediates the mindsets of their generation. Chinese Young Contemporary Artists, Series II at Moon Gallery taps into the different perspectives by young emerging Chinese artists, and maintains a platform for the Gen Y painters to realize and express their mentality, isolation and individuality in modern day China. |
